The Bicentennial Celebration
of the Marriage of Thomas
Lincoln and Nancy Hanks
received the
endorsement from the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial
Commission. This is truly a
great accomplishment and
honor!
The fifteen members of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial
Commission were
appointed by the President,
the Senate and the House of
Representatives following
the passage of the Abraham
Lincoln Bicentennial
Commission Act in 2000
(Public Law No: 106-173).
The
Commissioners are focused on
informing the public about
the impact Abraham Lincoln
had on the development of
our nation, and finding the
best possible ways to honor
his accomplishments.
To the hundreds of
volunteers and our sponsors a heartfelt thanks
for making the 200th Wedding Anniversary of
Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks a day all guests
will long remember.
There are not enough
words or deeds to show my gratitude to all
of you.
The celebration began on June 3rd at
9 am EDT with the
opening of "The American Experience." Guests
from all ages enjoyed this extraordinary
gathering of first person characters including
George Washington, Thomas Walker, George Rogers
Clark and Isaac Shelby. Visitors also
enjoyed demonstrations by a wagoneer, flintnapper,
shoemaker, spinner, period music, and experience
hands on log cabin construction.
At
1:00 pm, the outdoor performance titled "Dearly Beloved: The Vows of a
Lincoln Legacy," told the story of
the simple union between two people whose son
would become one of the world's great leaders.
Abraham Lincoln with son, Tad
Abraham Lincoln narrated the wedding event through the reading of letters he had written when people enquired about his life.
